Weekend: This Week’s Women-Related News

By Omada Okpe

Hello everyone, did you have an amazing week? Mine was a bit stressful and boring, anyhow I am here to give you a recap of all the interesting happenings this week, all women related of course *wink*

Indian village bans women from using mobile phones.
Sunderbari village in the Indian state of Bihar, has banned the use of mobile phones by women. According to the village officials the ban was issued because mobile phones were “debasing the social atmosphere”. Single women will be fined about $180 and married women about $40 if found defaulting.
Wait a minute let me check my calendar, yup its 2012 not 1912.

Female condom that dissolves?
Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a female condom which can protect against pregnancy and sexual diseases by dissolving inside the body. Not only would the condom block sperm, it could time-release a potent mix of anti-HIV drugs and hormonal contraceptives. Taking more pressure off the men eh? Anyway, what do you say to this? Yay or  nay?

Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera dies in a plane crash.
Latin music star, Jenni Rivera was killed in a plane crash on Sunday. The singer turned entrepreneur and reality t.v star died along with six others when the plane flying them to Mexico crashed. Jenni sold over 15million records worldwide and was aged 43. What a horrible tragedy, our hearts and thoughts are we with her loved ones in such a trying period. Absolutely sad.

The mother of Nigeria’s Finance minister kidnapped.
The mother of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Prof. Kamene Okonjo was kidnapped on Sunday from her residence by unknown gunmen. The 82 year old wife of the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha, Delta state was held captive before she was released on Friday morning. No official word on whether a ransom was paid. Wow. These crimes seem to be occurring at an alarmingly increasing rate. What do we blame for this? Unemployment? Poverty? An overworked police force? Whatever it is, I’m glad she was returned to her family in good health.

Well that’s all from me for this week. See you next week!
