Pamay Bassey: 52 Places Of Worship In 52 Weeks
Have you ever wondered about other religions apart from yours? Do you sometimes try to imagine what they believe, why they believe it and how it reflects in their daily life?
Pamay Bassey has not only imagined it, she has also experienced what it feels like to worship God in 52 different ways.
In 2009 she lost her grandmother and her father who she described as her hero after a long illness, that same year she also ended a relationship with someone she loved. With all the pain and loss she sought a meaning to life, a reason to hope and a light in the midst of the darkness.
She turned to God, the one place she thought will provide her the answers she was looking for, and she was determined to find him wherever she could. Her belief that spirituality could be and should be a context within which she could process all the terrible things that happened to her gave birth to the 52 Weeks of Worship Project.
Whether the place of worship practised her personal religious beliefs or not, she made a commitment to attend a place of worship every week for 52 weeks. She visited 61 churches, temples, mosques, synagogues and gathering places in the US, Mexico, the UK, South Africa and Nigeria
She documented her healing experience in a memoir that detailed her journey in these 52 places of worship. According to her “My 52 Weeks of Worship: Lessons from A Global, Spiritual, Interfaith Journey is based on my experiences during the first 52 weeks of my project. It is a spiritual memoir – so it is a compilation of stories and experiences – each chapter talks about my time visiting a different worship community – how I felt when I entered, what I experienced, how it touched me as I moved through my grief journey, what I learned, who I met – their stories, and how it contributed to my 3 main needs – healing, connection, and remembrance”.
