5 Signs You Are Too Controlling

January 14, 2013 by Lounge Lady in Highlights with 0 Comments

Controlling people feel the constant need to dominate other people and sometimes their conduct can be humiliating and agitating with other people. However, it is not a trait that you cannot change. Once you’re able to reflect on your behavior, it’s possible to become more accommodating. The first step in this direction begins with awareness. Here are 5 signs which show that you are too controlling.

Ignoring other people’s views and opinions
If you are too controlling, this characteristic would manifest in form of interactions at different levels- personal as well as professional. Do you out rightly dismiss other people’s views. Reflect on your conversations- you are physically listening to the opposite person but only waiting for them to have their say. Even if they make sense, you strongly want to act on your views and ideas. This kind of behavior could have serious consequences. You may find it difficult adjusting with colleagues and work on a project as a team, you might take rash decisions with your parents or children or even siblings, losing the respect of your near and dear ones.

Turning aggressive or even violent
Controlling people cannot allow people around them to make decisions. Do people do things without asking you or without consulting you? How do you react? When people around you act independently for little things like buying something without your knowledge and visit someone without informing you, how do you respond? Do you act out by abusing them or starting a row? If you treat people around you like property and control their lives then your behavior calls for a reality check.

Inability to work as a subordinate
Are you working as a full time professional and have a “boss”. Perhaps that’s the last thing you want – an authoritative figure in power who tells you what to do and how to do it. You do not have the scope to argue. The least you can do is offer suggestions but if you are made to do something against your wishes, you feel agitated, enraged and restless. It could even affect your performance and put your career at risk.

Instilling fear and anxiety
Your controlling nature could seriously affect your personal ties. Your family looks perpetually scared and anxious in your presence, with the feeling that if they do anything against your wishes you will overreact.

Failed relationships
Is your relationship on the verge of falling apart? Blame it on your controlling nature. A relationship is a bond of equals. Do you have repeated confrontations and fights because your partner does not “listen” to you? Your failed relationship is an indication that you are too controlling and it’s not only hurting you but also people around you
